ABOUT:
Vaishnavi M.Iyer is the Founder cum President of Shree Care Old Age Home Trust Mumbai. She is also an active member of journalism in Mumbai city.Vaishnavi M.Iyer’s Quotes:
All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles has strengthened me.
She lost hery mother at a young age. Her father did not support her, and her stepmother, like a typical stepmother, treated her indifferently. Thankfully, her sister took her under her wing, and she was able to shape her career. However, she had to slog hard and build her career brick by brick on her own strength.
Though she was poor, her heart melted for others. Since childhood, she has loved helping others. Her journey toward social service began when a school friend told her she had a torn uniform and that her family was too poor to buy new clothes. Moved by her plight, she gave her new uniform to her and wore her torn clothes! Thus, from her childhood, she has been drawn to people in distress or senior citizens who have dumped their children.
When she grew up, she did a brief course in journalism and had the advantage of working for FM Radio (Lucknow), where she did a show called Dalit Aawaj and voiced the problems of the poor in her radio show. Later, she came to Mumbai and did a nursing job because she was interested in serving humanity, but while working in hospitals, she was disappointed by the corruption in the medical fraternity. Hence, she decided to start Shree Home Care for senior citizens.
She took a loan of Rs 2 lakh and sold their valuables to fulfill her dream; besides financial problems, she faced stiff opposition from her family. Nevertheless, in 2017, she opened an old age home in Mulund West but had a hard time finding inmates. She used to roam in gardens and public places, and finally, she got 10 senior citizens after a three-month struggle.
However, during the Corona pandemic, she faced many problems as there were many new admissions. This brought about a decline in our revenue. As a result, to overcome the financial crisis, she sold her personal valuables like jewellery, mangalsutra, car and the flat in a building and shifted to a chawl. Despite selling all her assets, she was still in heavy debt. She had to pay the rent of the old age home, pay salaries to staff and buy milk, vegetables, fruit, and medicines. The owner of the place was threatening to throw them out of the place. It was a difficult time.
But as the axiom goes, 'There is always light at the end of the tunnel'; likewise, she was hopeful. She faced all adversities and wiped her tears. She stood rock-solid as she had complete faith in her God. When things went out of control and the owner unleashed terror. She decided to sacrifice her life for her old age home and was on the way to donate her kidney when God sent unforeseen help poured in, and things are back to normal. At Shree Care Old Age Home, She want to change the perceptions surrounding senior citizens. She believes it's about not only keeping the elderly healthy but also keeping them happy and giving them a family atmosphere.
Today, Shree Care Old Age Home is taking care of more than 40 senior citizens by providing them with good shelter, nutritious food, clean clothing, medical facilities, and above all, the love, compassion, and sense of family that these senior citizens desire in their ripe age.
